Let's Begin with the Short Story!

Let us start with the definition...as always...

What is a short story?

Well...a short story is a short work of fiction. Fiction, as you know, is prose writing about imagined events and characters. Prose writing differs from poetry in that it does not depend on verses, meters or rhymes for its organization and presentation.

There are five important elements of a short story and they are the:

1) Setting - Place, time, social background

2) Plot - Exposition, Rising action/s, Climax, Falling Actions and Conclusion

3) Characters and characteristics - Who takes part in the action of a short story and their characteristic/s (Features or qualities belonging typically to a person, place, or thing and serving to identify it)

4) Theme - The central idea of a story

5) Moral values/lessons which mean the principles and standards which determine the extent to which human action or conduct is right or wrong - The values you learn from the story you read
